Story Time: Unicorn’s Picnic

Posted on

Not often does one wonder what a Unicorn does in their spare time. Wait a minute, a unicorn? Did she say that?

Let’s think from a children’s perspective for a minute. Just a minute! Kids have brilliant, curious, and creative minds. They are constantly making up stories, blabbering away about random things, like the birdie fell out of the tree or the dog peed on the grass. Things that as adults we don’t find that interesting. (Okay a birdie falling out of a tree, that’s kind of interesting!) However, from a child’s perspective, the ever learning mind, is always creating. So how do we dig deeper into a child’s mind and turn their creative stories into fabulous artwork?

A brilliant friend of ours, April Hilland did just that. She recently wrote a children’s book, “Unicorns Picnic” that builds on a child’s imagination with the mystical creatures.

April is following her dreams of becoming a children’s author and has made the move from being a teacher to a writer. She has been a teacher-librarian her entire career, surrounded by children and their literature. One day her daughter, Piper asked her to start writing down the stories April makes up for her. Inspired by her daughters and her passion for writing, she decided it’s time to share those stories and her love of writing with other little ones. But this time she’s decided to do so in a big way!

April has started a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds so she can publish “Unicorn’s Picnic”. The campaign hopes to raise $3000 by May 26, 2017 and they are half way there! Currently they are at $1600 with 43 backers. I want to help keep the momentum going with her campaign which is why I am reaching out to all of you!

April’s graphic artist created a fantastic video that sums up this project perfectly! Check out the video below.

The Book

Unicorn’s Picnic: A magical picture book for children. April answers the question of “what do unicorns do in their spare time?”. The story follows the adventures of the Unicorn’s as they enjoy a day off from the hustle and bustle of Unicorn life. They hang out by the beach, play on the swings, and of course, have a picnic! The illustrations that April has let me take a peek at are absolutely terrific! The Unicorns are terribly cute and I can’t wait to read this story to my girls.

Let’s help April share this magical book with other young minds and keep the imagination alive!
